Program notes: “Harmony in Blue and Silver” was written in August of 1999 at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. It can be heard as a continuous set of variations on an original waltz. The waltz in its purest form occurs in the middle and at the end of the piece. This work can also be heard as a tone poem; the nostalgic-blue lyricism is contrapuntal with the silvery, bell-like percussion sonorities. He took the title from a painting by James Whistler. Although the music has an impressionistic quality, it is not an attempt to to evoke the content of the painting.
